"O LORD OUR LORD,
HOW EXCELLENT IS THY NAME IN ALL THE EARTH!"

Psalm 8:1

Tom Harding

Not only is His name excellent, but everything connected with our Lord is excellent. His lovingkindness is excellent (Psalm 36:7). His greatness is excellent (Psalm 150:2). His ministry is excellent in comparison with the high priest of old and all others (Heb. 8:6). He also has a most excellent name above all creatures (Heb. 1:4). Believers love to bless and talk about His name. "For there is no other name given among men, whereby we must be saved"(Acts 4:12).. In the previous articles we have seen He is called: The Advocate, Bread of Life, Captain of our salvation, The Deliverer, Emmanuel, The Foundation, The Great Shepherd, The High Priest. Let's consider some more of His names as our Lord is revealed in scriptures:

I AM THAT I AM.(Exodus 3:11-14)

You know the story how Moses approached the burning bush on the mountain. The Lord Jesus Christ spoke to him in the flame of fire out of the midst of the bush and declared His eternal name. Our Lord when He was manifested in the flesh declared unto the Jews, "Before Abraham was I Am"(John 8:58). Does it really matter if we believe that Jesus Christ is the Eternal, Almighty God? Our Lord said, "If you believe not that I Am, you shall die in your sins" (John 8:24). What think ye of Christ (Matt. 22:42)?

JESUS CHRIST (Matt. 1:21).

The angel of the Lord appeared unto Joseph in a dream, saying, "Fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son and thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins." Jesus means Saviour. Our Lord is what He is called. He did not fail to put away the sins of God's elect (Heb. 9:26). Nor did he fail to obtain and secure everlasting salvation for His people (John 6:37-40).

KING OVER ALL THE EARTH (Psalm 47:2).

Our Lord is called King many times in scripture, He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords (1 Tim. 6:15). It is very obvious to any thinking person that someone is in charge of all things. That someone is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is King by God's appointing (Psa. 2:6). Never think of Jesus Christ as weak and frustrated. He is the Almighty, Sovereign and Conquering King in and of and over all things (Rom. 11:36). Who all men must answer to and bow before (Phil. 2:9).

LAMB OF GOD (John 1:29).

All through the word the Lamb of God is spoken of. John the Baptist identified Jesus of Nazareth as God's sacrificial Lamb. He was designated and appointed as the Lamb before the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8).
