What a vast contrast is given unto us in this Psalm between the vain, flattering and deceitful words of men and the pure words, commandments, testimonies and precepts of the Lord. Notice these four things…
1). The Word of God is very pure, no alloy, perfect and no impurities within…refined seven times (Psalm 19:7-9; 119:40). All scripture is God given (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21).
2). The Word of the Lord like silver, it is very precious (Psalm 119:162). To you who believe He is precious (1 Peter 2:7). The Lord has given unto us exceeding great and precious promises and His promises are true, unfailing, sure and in Christ perpetually, forever (Joshua 23:14; Rom. 4:20-21; 2 Cor. 1:20 2 Peter 1:3-4).
3). The Word of the Lord is permanent, unchanging as He is unchanging (Malachi 3:6). “Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away” (Mark 13:31). “For ever thy word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89). “The word of the Lord endureth for ever” (1Peter 1:25).
4). The Word of the Lord is powerful. This includes His written word (Heb. 4:12), the Living Word, (John 1:1,14) and the preached Word (Rom. 1:16; 1Cor. 1:21).
5). The Word of the Lord is penetrating; sharp like a sword and penetrating like an arrow. “Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty. And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies; whereby the people fall under thee” (Psalm 45: 3-5).
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).
