CHARGED TO TRUST THE LIVING GOD
1 Tim. 6:17

Tom Harding

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;–1Tim. 6:17.

Every believer is charged or commanded not to trust in the uncertainty of fleshly, temporal and physical things (Matt. 6:19). Someone said, “they make themselves wings and flee away.” But rather in the living God and the certainty of Who He is and what He gives (John 1:14-17). Every word of this scripture gives us reason to trust our merciful and faithful Lord (Psa 64:10). He is the living, unchanging and Almighty God Who can be trusted and should be trusted ( Mal. 3:6; 1Tim. 6:15-16). Job said, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him” (Job 13:5 ). Our living Lord is the giving Lord, “who giveth us richly all things.” James said, “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). All the spiritual blessings of salvation in Christ are freely and sovereignly given (Rom. 8:32; 1Cor. 2:12; Eph. 1:3). These blessings are also richly, abundantly and plenteously given (Psalm 130:7; Isa. 55:7; Eph. 2:4; Col. 2:9-10). These free and abundant blessings in Christ are to be enjoyed, “all things to enjoy,” that which has been freely and richly given should be enjoyed and abundantly used for the furtherance of the gospel and the good of His church (Rom. 11:36).
